Education to become an animal keeper in the Zoo am Meer
- very good Certificate of Secondary Education or a good General Certificate of Secondary Education
- good school records in the classes of mathematics, German and biology
- readiness to do hard physical work
- readiness to work also during the weekend and late shifts
- animal-loving but also having the ability to accept that feeding animals have to be killed
- responsibility, self-supported working
Every year one to two apprentices (female/male) are engaged in the Zoo am Meer. The application should be submitted in January of the related year at the latest. Application documents consisting of an applying letter, the history of life, copies of the school records and references can be sent by mail (no plastic covers) to the following address: Zoo am Meer, H.-H.-Meier-Str. 7, 27568 Bremerhaven or by e-mail (email@example.com).
For all our employees a 39-hour-week applies, daily working is starting at 07.00 hrs. Every five to six weeks each one apprentice is doing the late shift, i.e. in summer the daily work is ending at 19.00 hrs which means also an extended lunch break. During late shift the apprentices are working from Monday to Sunday whereas the missing free days are recovered in the follow-up week.
Once a week the apprentices are travelling for lessons to Brake (educating professional schools for the area Wesermarsch). In addition once a week theoretical lessons take place in the zoo.
At the end of the education an one month lasting corporate education takes place in the Osnabrück zoo. The occurring costs will be paid by the zoo.
Allowance during education acc. to TVöD (as per 01.08.2009)
1st year of education: approx. EUR 750,--
2nd year of education: approx. EUR 800,--
3rd year of education: approx. EUR 850,--
